Solution Title: Terminal Services for Windows XP
asked by ttor on 12/06/2003 02:37PM PST
This solution was worth 250 Points and received a grade of A

Does anyone know how to enable Terminal Services for Windows XP professional? Searching on the internet everything I found says it isn't possible. I believe otherwise. I base this off of when I uninstalled Windows Messenger (using the method of unhiding it from add/remove windows components with the sysoc.inf file) I noticed that Terminal Services was also one of the hidden options.

I unhid it, but was unable to actually check it in add/remove windows components. Is there any way to check the box? What am I missing.

Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Terminal Services is providing the backbone of key Windows XP features such as Remote Desktop and Remote Assistance. Both these are available in XP Pro.

These both are Terminal Services clients and not the T.Server

sramesh2k is right. Terminal Server is for a Server level OS. Windows XP is classified as a client OS. The closest you will get is the Remote Desktop Connection.

Remote Desktop Configuration=>To enable Remote Desktop access, use the following steps:

Press CTRL-ESC to open the Start Menu.

Press M for My Computer (this step assumes the default start menu style).

Press SHIFT-F10 to open the context menu for My Computer.

Press R for properties.

Press SHIFT-TAB to access the System Properties tab control.

Arrow Right to the Remote tab.

TAB to the "Allow users to connect remotely to this computer" check box.

Press SPACE-BAR to check this check box.

Press ENTER to close the Remote Sessions information dialog.

TAB to the Select Remote Users button, and press SPACE BAR.

TAB to the Add button, and press SPACE BAR.

Enter the names of the users who should have remote access.

TAB to OK, and press ENTER to close the Select Users dialog.

TAB to OK, and press ENTER to close the Remote Desktop Users dialog.

TAB to OK, and press ENTER to close the System Properties dialog.

For more information on advanced options for Windows XP Professional Remote Desktop access, please refer to the Windows XP Professional documentation.

sramesh2k is on target here. In XP (both Home and Pro) TS is known as Remote Desktop. You will find it in the Accessories > Communications > Remote Desktop Connection.

It is also highly configurable. You can use remote Disk drives, printers and serial ports just as they were local. Cut and paste, etc. (Local Resources tab). Also ck out the Experience tab for additional tweaks.

Any questions, ask.

I realize that Remote Desktop is probably the closest I will get to Terminal Services with WinXP.

Can someone explain to me why, if Terminal Services is the backbone for RD like sramesh2k said, then was it not installed/checked under the add/remove windows components (after unhiding the entry)??

Click Start | Run | and type "MSTSC" [Remote Desktop client]

??? Guess I don't understand the question. Is it installed, or should I say, is it in your Communications folder? And if you can access it with sra's command, it is installed, right?

If the question is 'why, if it is installed, is it not check'd in the Add/Remove column of W Components', then to tell you the truth, I have noticed that on my systems, Windows components sometimes do not show up as installed (check'd), and for the life of me, I don't know why. Never really asked either. lol, eh?

Thanks for the information. Windows is just dumb sometimes.

I had to split up the points because you all were a great help in answering my questions.

Thanks.

я сам видел статью где парень рассказывал что он настроил ТС. и несколько юзеров работали вместе. Просто это не относится к документированым опциям ХР а жаль...
